Coffee Shop for Homeless People

We have an opportunity to serve at the Scott Mission once a month on a weekday evening! Specifically, the Mission has a coffee shop that serves coffee to poor and homeless people every evening from 7 pm to 10 pm. It is a time to serve food and get to know these people on a personal level.

What we need to do: let me know what weeknight you would be interested in serving. They can accomodate up to 10 of us serving. So, perhaps your small group may want to do it once a month for your meeting, or we can gather as a larger group on a different weeknight. Let me know as soon as possible so I can coordinate with the Scott Mission. Email scottgmoore@mac.com.

Spring Garden Renos Fundraiser

The flowers are sprouting (as witnessed by the picture from 'my' garden this afternoon) and the rain is coming (although it was snowing today too...)...either way...Spring (the season, not the church) is here! Bill Hall is trying to organize a fundraiser with the youth and Vocation to do some neighbourhood spring cleaning. He is looking at a Saturday in May. If you are interested, please email me at scottgmoore@mac.com or Bill at billhall@springgardenchurch.ca - all of the funds raised will go towards the building project "Faith Springs Eternal" at Spring Garden Church. Please let me know if you are interested as soon as possible!

Help Andrew and Michelle Move!!

Andrew and Michelle need a hand moving on May 1. They are moving closer to Spring Garden (The church) from Victoria Park and Eglinton. Any help loading or unloading would be greatly appreciate - if you can help, leave a comment here or email Michelle at michelletursa@yahoo.ca

Raising Money for the Food Bank!!

From Rachel: So, I am doing a fundraiser. I am selling most of my movies to raise money for the foodbank. Below is a list of the movies that i am selling, you will notice i haven't included prices. My reason for this is two fold...yep two fold. First, I didn't want to spend hours labeling each one at different prices, some are worth more than others. Second, I want to raise the most money i can for the foodbank. So basically, if you are interested in any of the movies let me know how much you are willing to give. I'll go on a first come first serve/highest bidder type basis.

Here's the movie list:
DVDs: 13 Going on 30, 50 First Dates, About A Boy, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Austin Powers: Goldmember, A Knights Tale, Anger Management, Back to the Future (The Complete Trilogy), Best in Show, Centre Stage, Down With Love, Forrest Gump, Freaky Friday, French Kiss, I am sam, Life or something like it, Lord Of the Rings (animated version), The Return of the King (animated version), Monsters Inc., Mr. Hollands Opus, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, My Fair Lady, Save the Last Dance, Shrek, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, Sleepless in Seattle, Sliding Doors, Spanglish, This is Spinal Tap

Videos: Armageddon, The Bachelor, Big Daddy, The Bachelor, The Breakfast Club, Cry Baby, Ever After, French Kiss, Mr. Bean (a few episodes, the green collection...its old), Romeo and Juliet, Sixteen Candles, Wayne's World, The Wedding Singer

Willowtree Painting - A Little Time Goes A Long Way

Thanks again to everyone who helped paint on Saturday, January 28th (can you believe that was 3 weeks ago already?! yikes!). 11 of us helped throughout the day. Thanks to the hardcore full-day painters - 8 am to 7 pm! The apartment looks completely new! It is amazing what can be done in one day...Wanda and her family were just ecstatic and so thankful. I hope that we can continue to do this in our community.

Impacting Our Community - January 28th!!

We have coordinated a day to help a family that lives in the Willowtree community housing which Spring Garden Church is involved with. On Saturday, January 28th, we will be painting part of this family's house. If you are free and interested, please email me. I will be there the entire day, starting at 8 a.m. and probably going until 5 p.m. - whatever it takes to finish the day. Obviously, only come as you are available - shifts would be great!!

Also, this Saturday, January 21st, Andrew Little will be doing some prep work - plastering. If you have experience with plastering or are enthusiastic about it, email him and give him a helping hand.

We need supplies too. Do you have brushes? rollers? drop sheets? paint trays? Please let me know (email me).

Habitat for Humanity

14 of us had a blast (I think) on Saturday doing a build for Habitat. The wind was blowing, the hands were numb, staple guns were flying, and tape was a-plenty. Thanks to Anna for her work co-ordinating H4H and especially to everyone who came out to make it a fun day. Hopefully we can do it again! Here are some pics...email me (Scottgmoore@mac.com) if you want larger versions.

Some Service Opportunities!

From Rick Wukasch:

One of our goals for groups this year was that you would pray and dream and listen to God and each other about a special service project (or more than one!) that you can do as a group.
We hoped you would decide about this early, since the year flies by, and opportunities do as well.

Here are some ideas:
Do Coffee Time on Sunday mornings -
Many of your people are regular partakers of Java-time in the Lounge on Sunday mornings. Cell groups used to do this on rotation way back when. The people who have been doing this regularly have either moved on (Torrens), had babies (Janet Campbell Body), or are tired and need reinforcements! What if your group was to pick a few weeks, or even a month of the year to host this Coffee Time? Call Terri Schulz, who has the details on how to do it – 416-495-0138 eric.terri@sympatico.ca

ADOPT-A-FAMILY:
Naomi VanDeVisch tells me that again this year Toronto City Mission is asking for your assistance in helping less fortunate families in our communities have a happier Christmas.
The Adopt-a-family program links families living near our mission locations in Malvern, St. James Town, Bridletowne and Willowtree with donors. Donors are asked to provide each member of a selected family with a $30.00 gift certificate to a store of their choice and a $20.00 voucher for food. The total cost is $60.00 per person per family that includes the certificates for a Christmas gift and food as well as an additional $10.00 per person to be applied to the cost of the Christmas celebration dinner. If sponsors purchase the gift certificates, the $10.00 per person may be forwarded directly to the Toronto City Mission. Our experience has been that the certificate program gives families equity in the community and allows them the option to choose what each family member would appreciate receiving.
Your participation is essential to making this program work. For more information or to register as a donor please call TCM at 416-922-6223.
Help with the TCM – Willowtree Christmas Dinner
Contact TCM at the same number to volunteer to host a table, cook a turkey, etc.

Be an Usher, Greeter, or Nametag Day Team
It’s great when Ken Gillan doesn’t have to run around grabbing people just before the offering to help, and when there are smiling people welcoming others to worship, or helping us connect better on first name Sundays. What if your group was to do a month of ushering, or get into a rotation, or provide greeters at some of the doors for a month, or help distribute name tags?
For ushering, Contact Ken at 416-781-0679 or kengillan@hotmail.com
For greeting, contact Wil Tranter at 416-229-0494 wiltranter@sympatico.ca
For Name tag Sundays, contact Hugo or Diana Marrello at 416-492-6944 dianam@marcl.com

Adopt a Garden, Be a snow remover from the sidewalks before church
Now that the bulbs have been planted, and the perennials are in place at Spring Garden, we need people to tend them, weed them, and water them periodically.
If you like gardening, contact Wes Chapman of the Property Comm., and help us keep the place looking like a spring garden, not a hayfield J.
Or help us make it easier for people to find their way to the door by arriving early to shovel snow on those winter mornings.
Call Wes Chapman – 416-222-6963 wes.chapman@tdsb.on.ca

Help With the Community Food Cupboard
Throughout the summer, there were not enough volunteers to help run our food bank – the Community Food Cupboard. Currently, it is shut down. What if your group took this on as a project for a month, or a year, working with Al Karhu and Gene Lem to make it happen?
Call Al Karhu - 416-502-0144 or Gene Lem 416-222-5341 beldip@pathcom.com

There are lots more possibilities. Perhaps God might stir you up about some around the church, or in the community! Listen to Him, and go for it!

Rick

A Challenge to Spring Garden?

Just wondering how we could spur some other people on within Spring Garden to reach out to the community. Any ideas? T-shirts? Messages in the bulletin?

Helping out at Toronto City Mission

We have an opportunity to help out a couple of families that are associated with the Toronto City Mission. It would involve coming into their homes and doing some cleaning and painting. I painted my entire house last year and it was a blast. There is something soothing about using a roller...Please email me if you are interested and we can figure out dates!

HFH Update!

Our build date is set!! Mark off Saturday, January 14, 2006 on your calendars. If you haven't already, please let Anna C know whether or not you are interested and can make the day (or have a vague sense of whether or not you can realistically) at leafs29@hotmail.com. Youth Outreach

This is an opportunity to work with "at risk" youth doing a basketball outreach program. Basketball skills not necessary! I volunteered when I was in high school and had an amazing experience.

When: Friday evenings 6:30 - 9:30 PM
Where: Beverly Heights M.S., (Jane/Sheppard)
Contact: Scott Guthrie at sdmgu3@hotmail.com

They are looking for a fairly consistent commitment, but contact Scott (Guthrie) for more details. He also goes to Spring and I can introduce you if you are interested!

Toronto Habitat for Humanity

Ever notice how if two people start hammering a nail, their hammering always synchronizes? Hmmm...Maybe we can test out the theory with Toronto Habitat for Humanity.

Could be a fun thing to do as a group. Contact me if you are interested and we can apply to volunteer as a group.
